The Legend of Eisi

It’s no surprise that The Legend of Eisi turned out to be a light-hearted and humorous adventure. Growing up in the 90s, we were both inspired by video-games packed with 8-bit graphics, cheesy MIDI sounds and unforgettable larger-than-life characters.

As we embarked on this Cycle, we saw an opportunity to pay homage to a lost era where being silly was okay. Even when things had to be simple due to technological limitations, they were never simplistic.

Finding creative ways to implement these elements into the world of Eisi was a lot of fun, experimenting with new approaches and techniques. 

Matthias took cues from the geometric aesthetics of video-games, implementing block formations, vibrant colour gradients, and simple character designs. Besides the stylistic typography, the characteristic 2D perspective was adopted throughout the cycle.

Konstantine opted for unconventional methods such as using paper and membranes to simulate synthesiser sounds without relying on computerised MIDI. To further complement the texture, he incorporated multilayered guitar parts and overdubbed recordings. Along with covering famous video-game jingles, the heroic achievements of the gang were embellished with highly pictorial RPG melodies.

We really enjoyed the opportunity to have a good time with our gang on this nostalgic adventure.

Eisi, Koala, Hund and Tölpy are Matthias’ lively flatmates. They are a gang and like doing things together. When nobody is at home, sometimes they have parties.

Eisi grew up together with Matthias and has always been his best friend and supporter. He likes adventures and loves the snow, he even invented a snow-dance to cast the snow without worrying about the consequences for others. He has a talent for dancing and posing.

Koala is from France and belongs to Matthias' fiancée. When she moved in with Matthias, Eisi and Koala met for the first time and things started to get romantic for them too. Koala is very kind and cute, a little shy and likes to sleep and cuddle. She has a pouch on her belly where she carries little treasures.

Hund is the wisest and oldest of the group. He lived with Matthias’ grandmother who was a literary scholar and from whom he learned a lot. He used to lie in front of her balcony door to keep the wind out. He is calm and cares for everyone and with his long body he can give the others a rest. He likes books and to wear watches.

Tölpy comes from the Galapagos Islands. He is cheerful and funny, and he likes to constantly jump, dance and fool around. He often makes others laugh as he can be clumsy. He cannot hide his feelings as the intensity of his blue color signals his mood.

At some point during the journey, the skills of another companion were required  to complete the quest, and so Camel from the Sahara Desert joined the party.

Camel likes to explore the world with his head peeking out of Konstantine’s backpack. It was only the guitar, the backpack and Camel when Konstantine was moving to Germany. He is known for his taste for the finer things in life - like his love of cold brews and warm sunsets.

When a Macguffin was about to enter the campaign, the animals misunderstood the term and so they started hunting for a shiny MacMuffin.
